1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 { My, aren't we original. } 5. f3 Nc6 6. Be3 Nxd4 7. Bxd4 e5 8. Bf2 { According to Fritz, each of my opponent's moves including and following this slowly began to give me an advantage in this game. } 8... d5 9. Qd3 a6 10. exd5 Qxd5 11. Qxd5 Nxd5 12. c3 Bd6 13. Bc4 Be6 14. Bxd5 Bxd5 15. O-O { Fritz actually evaluated this position at -0.69. I was winning?! } 15... O-O { ARGH!! All that work and I overlooked the fact that I had two unprotected bishops in a nice neat line for White's rook. Stupid!! } 16. Rd1 Bxf3 { Grabbing what I could for the lost bishop. I decide to try weakening my opponent's defense. } 17. gxf3 Be7 18. Nd2 { Either a small act of mercy, or my opponent was toying with me. I had expected Rd7, realizing once again too late that my move of choice was flawed. } 18... Rfd8 19. Nc4 f6 20. Ne3 { Down bishop for pawn and with no prospects for counterplay, I decide to pack it up. }

Honestly, it surprised me when Fritz fed me 8. Bc3 over 8. Bf2. Now that I look at it though, I like it better; it does hold that d-pawn, it preemptively blocks any threats on the a5-e1 diagonal (mostly Qa5+), and with the f-pawn uprooted already and queenside castling likely, there's no need to push the c-pawn forward. The knight isn't really hindered because Nd2 does just as well to protect the pawn chain.

Maybe it's because I'm stuck with Chessbase Light until I talk myself into buying something more expensive, but each time I run it, it gives me -0.69 after 15. ... O-O-O. I'd like to pretend I understand why, but I really don't see that the position is all that valuable either, besides having the bishop pair and connected rooks.

This was a nice positional win for you, but when I post the wrap-up for the other one, everyone can see how you killed me tactically as well. ;)
